Frequently Asked Qustions
What happens at my first visit?
In order to treat each and every patient, as an individual with unique dental needs, it is vital to completely assess your current oral health. The dentist will have a very in-depth conversation with you to discover your goals and main concerns. We take digital x-rays, which have a 90% radiation reduction. X-rays are a very important part of diagnosis and allow for proper treatment planning. The dentist’s clinical exam consists of an oral, head and neck cancer screening, followed by muscles, ligaments and joints that open and close the mouth. Your doctor will then examine your teeth, gums and bone that hold the teeth in (the peridontium). If appropriate, digital photos will then be taken to assist with the diagnosis and the final treatment plan that is right for you. Once you and your doctor have determined the right treatment plan for you, this information will be entered into our computer and printed for you. You will receive a copy of the final proposed treatment plan that is phased out procedure by procedure, as it also includes the financial aspect of treatment broken down to show the insurance and patient responsibilities.

How can I make my teeth whiter?
There are several methods to make teeth whiter. The best whitening technique is the dentist prescribed whitening system, a safe and effective method that changes the color of the teeth to a naturally whiter shade. This could be an in-office or at home prescription. Either method is successful only when you are the right candidate for it and when prescribed by your dentist. DO NOT attempt to use household bleach. Veneers are an option for those who do not qualify for whitening their teeth and may be interested in more than just improving the shade of the teeth. There are many other ways to improve the appearance of your smile. if you are interested in a cosmetic consultation to assess your cosmetic needs, please let us know.

I have been thinking about having my front teeth veneered. How long does it take and how long will they last?
If veneers are the appropriate treatment option for you as diagnosed and proposed by your dentist, it takes two working dental visits about 4-6 weeks apart. There are some planning visits to determine what results you want and follow-up bite adjustment visits. Porcelain veneers do not stain and are as strong as natural teeth. When properly placed they will not come off or break even when eating tough and chewy food items such as taffy, caramel or corn on the cob. Like natural teeth, veneers may break also. You should still practice good dental home care.

What can you tell me about amalgam or silver filings?
The material typically contains about 50% mercury and even though the ADA has deemed it safe, it is still considered a toxic and hazardous material outside the mouth. In fact, several European countries have entirely banned the use of the material. Amalgam fillings are very unaesthetic and because of corrosion, typically turn dark with time. There are better aesthetic materials to use. Our office does not place amalgam filings. We restore teeth with the highest quality composite tooth colored restorations that are non-toxic, esthetically pleasing and customized to match the shade of your teeth.

What if I have missing teeth?
Many options exist, including bridges, implants, or partial dentures. With today’s advanced technology, no matter what your concerns, there is no reason to live with missing teeth. Not only does a full set of teeth improve self-esteem but also makes all the other teeth last longer by reducing stress placed on the remaining natural teeth. All options are available in our office.
